As principal author of the Declaration of Independence and third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson was one of the most influential and enigmatic personalities the United States ever conceived. While primarily a lawyer and politician, Jefferson mastered many disciplines. He was a statesman and diplomat, architect, horticulturist, musician, philosopher, and Founding Father. Jefferson was the nation’s first Secretary of State under George Washington, and, as president in 1803, he oversaw the expansion of the United States with the Louisiana Purchase. For over five decades he loved and served his country guiding her through expansion, war, turmoil, and prosperity.
