Union Iron Brigade in Gaiters Kneeling Firing, No.2
The Iron Brigade, which Johnny Reb scornfully referred to as, “Those Dammed Black Hats!” originally consisted of volunteers from western states including Wisconsin, Indiana, and later Michigan. This kneeling firing figure exhibits the standard infantry dress worn by the Iron Brigade throughout the majority of the American Civil War: a nine button model 1858 Infantry Frock Coat; M1858 Enlisted Man’s Dress “Hardee” Hat; Model 1855 Knapsack; Blue Covered M1858 Smoothside Canteen; and lastly the leggings often referred to as gaiters commonly worn by soldiers in the ranks of the famous Iron Brigade.
