The 146th New York Infantry Regiment fought under several titles: the 5th Oneida Regiment, Garrard’s Tigers, and Halleck’s Infantry, after New York-born Union General Henry Halleck. They participated in some of the major battles of the war receiving their baptism of fire at Fredericksburg, followed by Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Battle of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, Appomattox Court House, and many more in between. They suffered severe casualties by war’s end. The regiment was nearly decimated at the Wilderness where many were trapped and consumed by the fires ignited during battle. While their casualties in combat were great, still more died in captivity at the infamous Andersonville prison camp.
