The typical German cartridge boxes of the period housed either a single sewn leather block that could hold 30 cartridges or a wood block bored on both sides that would hold 46. Under the front flap there was a small leather pouch attached to the box that could be used to store flints and other items that is closed by a draw string. The boxes were suspended by a wide buff leather strap and were decorated with a large brass plate. Our von Donop cartridge box plate is based on a similar Bavarian one currently on display at Yorktown National Military Park in Yorktown, Virginia. The plate was recovered from Redoubt #9 during restoration work in the 1930s.
