Confederate Infantry in Frock Coat Advancing Loading
Although the regulation Confederate infantry frock coat was double breasted, most of the frock coats made followed the general cut and style of the U.S. Army single breasted frock coat of 1851. Gray woolen cloth was the material of choice for these uniforms, but with shortages of imported cloth, various cotton and woolen jean cloths were domestically produced as a substitute. In many cases the dyes used produced colors ranging from steel grays to various shades of brown and tan. Even the gray clothing faded creating a wide variation in color.
