George Armstrong Custer was a United States Army officer and cavalry commander in the American Civil War and the American Indian Wars. Following Custer’s graduation from West Point, he joined General George B. McClellan’s staff and forged a relationship with future cavalry General Alfred Pleasonton, both of whom recognized his ability as a cavalry leader. Custer was promoted to Brigadier General days before the Battle of Gettysburg where he commanded the Michigan Brigade. Custer would end the war with rank of Brevet Major General. After the war Custer was commissioned a Lt. Colonel in the regular army and sent west to fight in the Indian Wars, mainly the Lakota and other Plains Tribes. Custer with his entire command would be killed 25 June 1876, at Battle of Little Bighorn, now forever known as “Custer’s Last Stand.”
