German Grenadier Running in Greatcoat with 98K, 1941-45

The Karabiner 98K rifle went into service with the Wehrmacht in 1935. It was developed from the Mauser Standardmodell 1924 which in turn was derivative of the Gewehr 98, a bolt-action rifle designed in 1898 and used in World War I. Despite its designation of carbine it was no shorter nor lighter than its immediate predecessor but was just as reliable and accurate with an effective range of 550 yards. It was widely used by all branches of the German army and saw action in every theatre of war. Although comparable to the long guns fielded by Germany’s enemies at the beginning of the War, it was soon out-classed by the American semi-automatic, M1 Garand. Still, it continued to be the main service rifle of the Wehrmacht until the end of fighting, with about 1 to 2 million of them produced annually.
