With its pressed steel design and simple, welded construction, the MP 40 (Maschinenpistole 40) was the definitive submachine gun for the German Army. This reliable weapon was relatively cheap to manufacture. It had an open-bolt, blowback-operation with automatic its only mode of fire which could make the weapon climb off target with a sustained trigger pull. However, due to its low rate of fire, single shots could be discharged and the weapon brought back on target. The magazine could hold 32, 9mm rounds and had a range of 100-150 meters making the weapon very accurate compared to its contemporaries over these short distances.
