The history of the Michigan Marching Band began in the fall of 1896 when a seventeen year old from Ann Arbor, Harry dePont, invited all musicians on campus to attend a meeting for the purpose of organizing a band for the University. Nearly 30 musicians gathered in Harris Hall on a November evening for that initial meeting. Today, the band is a 350-plus strong ensemble. In 1972 the band allowed women to join their organization.
